<description>Well . . . here's my 2 sense (where in the hell is the "cents" key anyway?):

I watched Austin City Limits and saw the band last night. I put on the headphones and cranked the crap up out of the volume. Rilo Kiley is an immensely talented band. They are tight and they can really fill the room with sweet sounds. No problem with their musicianship. And they are definitely strong song writers. They play with moderate passion, though nothing compared to The Hives. But then again, who does? But I do have a problem and that is with song selection. Now, I know that Austin is deep in the heart of Texas, no duh, I've played in Austin several times, but Rilo Kiley didn't seem true to who they are on record. They played the show with a decidedly country bent. Not that they don't have those tendencies to start with, they do. However, none of the songs that aired, and I must mention "songs that aired," because Rilo Kiley could have played a huge set and the "powers that be" may have just pulled out the 6 songs that they thought most fit the listening tendencies of the usual "ACL" viewing audience . . . anyway, none of the songs that were broadcast were of the Rilo Kiley alternative pop variety, most of them seemed very introspective and like I said, leaned toward a country sound. And that's fine, but people who watched that show not knowing who the band were are going to go out and pick up a copy of "The Execution of All Things" and be very surprised. BTW, they played nothing from that record, nor anything from the Initial Friend ep. A couple of the songs were indicated as being "new" and the others were probably from their latest album, which I don't have and have not heard.

My final thought, as if the above were not long winded and prosaic enough:
Based on the songs I heard on the show, If I had tuned in not knowing who Rilo Kiley were, I would likely not have watched their entire set. I certainly wouldn't have sought out their music on the store shelves. Too bad. I have a live bootleg from a show somewhere in Texas and despite some shakey mixing, it rocked. And all of the songs we featured in episode 42 were played in the first half dozen songs of their first set. I only wish they had showed that side of the band on T.V.
